young man talks to elderly lady at grocery store

What Is An Old Lady Scam?

A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around.

Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on.

Finally, he went to the checkout line, but the old lady happened to be in front of him.

“Pardon me,” she said,

“I’m sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable.

It’s just that you look just like my son, who just died recently.”

“I’m very sorry,” replied the young man, “is there anything I can do for you?”

“Yes,” she said, “As I’m leaving, can you say ‘Goodbye, Mother’?

It would make me feel so much better.”

“Sure,” answered the man.

As the old old was leaving, he called out, “Goodbye, Mother!”

As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50.

“How can that be?” He asked, “I only purchased a few things!”

“Your mother said that you would pay for her,” said the clerk.

And you thought an old lady couldn’t be so crafty?

In the fast-paced world of today, age is often associated with wisdom and life experience. However, there are instances where some seniors use this angle to trick the younger generation. One such scheme, commonly known as the “Old Lady Scam,” preys on the kindness and empathy of unsuspecting young people.

The scam typically involves an elderly lady following her youthful mark around in a grocery store. Finally, at the checkout counter, she happens to be just ahead of him. She tells him a moving story of his resemblance to her departed son.

After a brief chat, she asks him for a small favor, which he gladly does. Then in a surprise twist, the young man finds he’s been into paying for her grocery bill at the checkout counter.

Unfortunately, more often than not, the elderly con artist gets away free. The young man is left feeling taken advantage of, realizing that the wisdom of age was employed in an elaborate ruse.

This scam serves as an example of the importance of remaining vigilant and exercising prudence, even in the face of seemingly genuine situations. The moral of the story is the need to strike a balance between compassion and skepticism, so as not to fall victim to slick con stories.

Generally, we should respect our elders. However, scammers come in all shapes and sizes, especially when they involve financial transactions with strangers, regardless of their age. Let us learn from such stories to preserve our bigheartedness while staying vigilant to protect ourselves from the bad guys or gals.
